Rotoscoping and Match Moving

Matchmoving is the process of taking live-action video or photos and inserting virtual 3D models and other graphics so that they seamlessly blend into the background image. This creates the illusion that the added graphics actually existed in the scene when it was originally filmed.

Using some of the same software used to create special effects in major Hollywood movies, Illume Arts can take live-action video and derive the real-world camera motion data by tracking specific points in the footage. This camera motion data is imported into our 3D animation programs where 3D models are inserted. After matching the camera motion, adjusting for lens distortions, masking, and carefully mimicking the color, texture, lighting, and film artifacts, the end result is a convincing movie with virtual 3D objects appearing to actually exist in the scene.

Another benefit to our Matchmoving process is that the tracked video features provide 3D data of the scene being filmed. After being tracked, a simple panoramic video shot of a location can provide enough 3D data to reconstruct the entire scene in 3D, with accurate measurements in 3D space.

Among its many uses, Matchmoving offers the ability to visualize new designs inserted into their actual environment before any construction begins and before materials are even purchased. With Matchmoving, Illume Arts offers architects, engineers, planners, builders, and designers new levels of cost saving pre-visualization during the review phases of their projects.
